When I was just sixteen, I was part of a garage band. We landed a gig at a field party. I remember it vividly: after we finished a song, I believe it was Led Zeppelin’s “Tangerine,” a guy from the crowd walked right up to the stage. He looked directly at me and, with zero hesitation, just blurted out, “You suck.” Ouch. Even though he might have been talking about the whole band, I took it personally, right to the heart. It stung, deeply. But what felt like a crushing blow in that moment actually became an unexpected catalyst. That harsh criticism, as much as it hurt, ignited something in me. It became the driving force, pushing me to practice harder and more dedicatedly than ever before. Looking back, that moment absolutely sucked, but honestly, I wouldn’t change it for anything. It shaped who I became as a musician.

I believe I was 15 or 16 when I listened to Pink Floyd's Animals album. I had been familiar with the band prior to that moment, but the album changed me. At the time I was fully into hard rock guitarists like George Lynch, Viv Campbell, etc. But in an instant Gilmour flipped a switch where it became less about flash and more about feel.

But one Christmas I received a Sears guitar and amp. The action was high, the intonation off and the sound - meh, but I loved it!!!!

It's crazy how sometimes your biggest influences don't even have to be famous people. I remember when I was in third grade, the local high school from Romeo, Michigan, had a band, a rock band, as part of their high school band. The band's name was called Pegasus. They came to our elementary school one day and performed Stairway to Heaven, Black Sabbath's Iron Man, and Paradise by the Dashboard Lights. It just blew me away. It made me want to be in a rock band so bad.

As my tiny fingers fumbled on the fretboard, randomly strumming, it wasn't just noise; it was pure electricity surging through me. It hit every nerve. From that instant, I was driven to master it, memorizing chord shapes for years before my hands were even big enough to truly play.
