When The Smiths arrived in the early 1980s, rock music was dominated by big arena sounds, flashy guitar solos, and over-the-top production. Then came a band from Manchester that stripped things down and completely changed the emotional tone of alternative music. At the center was the songwriting partnership between Morrissey and Johnny Marr. Marr’s jangly, melodic guitar style pulled inspiration from 1960s pop but sounded completely fresh in the post-punk era. Instead of heavy distortion, his playing relied on layered melodies and intricate riffs that became a blueprint for countless indie and alternative bands.

It’s been a little disheartening to see some of the comments surrounding the passing of Boston vocalist Tommy DeCarlo. Music fans are passionate, and that passion is part of what makes music so powerful. But sometimes our love for the past can make it harder to appreciate those who carry the music forward. Tommy was never trying to replace Brad Delp—no one could. What he did was help keep the music of Boston alive for fans who still wanted to experience those songs on stage. Nostalgia is a powerful thing, but it shouldn’t prevent us from recognizing the people who dedicate themselves to preserving the music we love. Thank you, Tommy, for keeping those songs alive for so many years and for giving fans the chance to continue sharing in that music.
